There are many concepts to explore and learn about when it comes to nutrition. But one of the basic principles is “What goes in must come out.” Your body is like a complex machine. It extracts what it needs from the foods you eat, and it gets rid of the rest through urine and bowel movements.

If you think you have a problem with your bowels, you should take it seriously. Don’t be shy or nervous to talk about it and make sure to address it without delay, because it can be very serious to your health.

The first step is finding out if there is actually a problem. Take notice of how many bowel movements (“BM”) you have each day. If you have at least one per day, it’s not a major problem, even though it is better to have two to three BM’s per day. A person who eats more often may even have more. But if you find that you are only having one per week or a couple per month, then you could have a serious problem.

The easiest way to make sure you’re having sufficient BMs is to eat a lot of fruits and raw vegetables. If you’re not in the habit of eating fruits and vegetables, do your best to change that. Push fruits and vegetables into your diet as often as you can; your body will thank you.
